Buttery Tomato Sauce with Onion

The simplest of all sauces, this pure yet irresistibly rich tomato sauce is ideal for all types of pasta. Featuring peeled plum tomatoes, sugar, butter and a single yellow onion, the sweetness of the butter and tartness of the tomatoes make it irresistible.

Ingredients

  • 2 (28 ounce) cans Tuttorosso® Peeled Plum Tomatoes, crushed with hands
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 stick butter, cubed
  • 2 medium onions, peeled and quartered lengthwise
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Instructions

Step one

Bring tomatoes, sugar, butter and onion to a boil in a 4 quart saucepan over medium-high heat.

Step two

Reduce heat to medium low and cook, stirring occasionally and mashing any large pieces of tomato with the back of a wooden spoon. Cook about 45 minutes or until flavors blend and sauce is slightly reduced.

Step three

Remove onion and season sauce with salt and pepper before serving.
