Homemade Baked Beans with Apple Smoked Bacon

These baked beans start with our best-selling Crushed Tomatoes, white beans, garlic and smoky bacon, a bit of sweetness from brown sugar and molasses all balanced with a bit of tang from vinegar and Dijon mustard. These baked beans are not at all basic, but who wants basic? These are the best baked beans you will make because your best creations start with Tuttorosso.

Ingredients

  • 3 strips bacon, minced, we used thick cut apple smoked bacon
  • 1 onion, minced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 5 (15 ounce) cans canned white beans, drained and rinsed, we used a combination of Great Northern and Canellini beans
  • 1 (28 ounce) can Tuttorosso® Italian Inspirations Crushed Tomatoes Chunky Style
  • 3 tablespoons Tuttorosso® Tomato Paste
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, lightly packed
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 4 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and membrane removed then minced, leave seeds for more heat
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

Step one

Heat a large pot over medium heat.  Add bacon and cook 8-10 minutes until brown and crisp.

Step two

Add the onions, and garlic, cook an additional 5 minutes.

Step three

Add the beans, tomato paste, crushed tomatoes, brown sugar, molasses, cumin, vinegar, Dijon and jalapeno.  Reduce heat and cook for 40 minutes.  Taste and season with salt and pepper.
