Our friend Riccardo shared his rich homemade tomato sauce recipe. It’s perfect for serving over angel hair or other delicate pasta as your first course (“primo” in Italian) for Sunday dinner with the family.
Ingredients
- 5 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 2 medium onions, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
1 Red Gold® Canned Whole Peeled Tomatoes 28 oz
- OR
2 Red Gold® Canned Whole Peeled Tomatoes 14.5 oz
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
Step one
Heat oil in large sauce pan. Sauté onions and garlic until browned. Add whole peeled tomatoes with juice, basil, oregano, salt and black pepper.
Step two
Cover with lid and cook for 10 minutes. Open the lid and mash the tomatoes until pieces are still visible. Cook uncovered for another 15 to 20 minutes.
Step three
Serve over your favorite type of pasta.
