Ingredients

  • Homemade Marinara Sauce
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • fresh basil, to taste, optional
  • Kosher salt & freshly ground pepper, to taste
  • 2 cans Red Gold® Canned Whole Peeled Tomatoes 28 oz

  • Stromboli
  • 1 pizza dough, store-bought or homemade
  • 1/2 cup marinara sauce, plus more for serving
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese, or 8 slices fresh mozzarella
  • 8 slices pepperoni
  • 8 slices salami
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

Make the Marinara Sauce – Step one

In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Sauté garlic and onion until translucent, about 3-5 minutes. Season with salt, pepper and oregano.

Step two

Dice the Red Gold Whole Peeled Tomatoes, then add them with their juice to the pot. Optionally, add the tomatoes whole and use a masher to break them up.

Step three

Lower the heat and simmer for 30 minutes to 1 hour, until sauce thickens to desired consistency. Stir in fresh basil if using, then remove from heat.

Make the Stromboli – Step one

Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step two

On a floured surface, roll out pizza dough into a 12×14’inch rectangle.  Spread a thin layer of marinara sauce over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border.

Step three

Sprinkle mozzarella evenly over the sauce. Layer pepperoni and salami slices over the cheese, then sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of Parmesan.

Step four

Carefully roll up the dough from one long side into a tight log, pinching edges to seal. Tuck in the ends.

Step five

Place the stromboli seam-side down on the baking sheet. Brush the top with olive oil, then sprinkle remaining Parmesan and Italian seasoning.

Step nine

Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool slightly, then slice and serve with extra marinara for dipping.
